If you believe your child is a fit for Minnetonka’s Navigator Program for exceptionally gifted students, please follow these steps.
Step 1: Information Sessions
Families should first attend one of the below information sessions in which District High Potential staff will discuss acceptance procedures, student and parent expectations, classroom structure, curriculum and other logistics.
November 22, 7 p.m. at the Minnetonka District Service Center
December 6, 7 p.m. at the Minnetonka District Service Center
In addition, there will be a Navigator Classroom Open House at Scenic Heights on December 13 and Excelsior Elementary on December 15 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Step 2: Application
Applications to the program along with a student portfolio must be submitted by 4 p.m. January 9, 2012. The portfolio should demonstrate the student’s work or provide other anecdotal evidence that may better inform the admission decision.
Step 3: Assessment (Tentatively February 1)
Following the interview, applicants will complete the WISC IV assessment. The General Abilities Index portion of the test will be used as well as the full scale IQ, The WISC IV is an internationally accepted standardized measurement of intellectual functioning that yields full scale IQ, verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed scores. The WISC IV will be administered by a licensed psychologist provided by the District. Other information including student profiles, NWEA data, WINGS performance, etc. will be used as well. We will not accept any outside assessment as part of the application process.
Step 4: Interview
Potential parents will be asked to attend an interview/discussion session with a small admissions committee. During this session, the committee will gain further insight into whether or not the student is likely to be successful within the parameters of the program. In addition, the parent will meet with the program director to discuss the child’s application.
Step 5: Simulation Day (April 2012)
Potential students engage in a morning in the simulated Navigator learning environment where Navigator teachers observe how students interact within this unique learning environment.
Decision
The admissions committee will review each applicant individually to ensure all accepted students are likely to achieve a successful educational experience within the Navigator Program. Once a decision has been made, the program director will notify parents by phone and a letter confirming the decision.
