 Communicating with the Board

As elected representatives, School Board members welcome questions and conversations related to governing the School District. Board members actively participate in many areas throughout the community, attending advisory council meetings, serving on committees, and attending school and community meetings and events. Board members welcome invitations to your events and will make an effort to attend.

The School Board is a governing body that makes decisions through a majority vote of the Board. The School Board Chair, or designee, serves as the spokesperson for the Board.

The School Board delegates the administration and management of the School District to the Superintendent. Questions related to operational or management issues are best directed to the school personnel or District Service Center personnel closest to the area of concern. Classroom issues should first be directed to the classroom teacher. School issues should first be directed to the school principal. District issues should be directed to the administrator responsible for the program or service involved. If the first-level of communication does not resolve the issue, the immediate supervisor, principal or Superintendent should be the next contact.  Administrators in the District take pride in being very available to students, parents and community members.

Communicating with the School Board

There are formal and informal opportunities to communicate with the School Board as a whole and with individual members.

Public Meetings:  The Board meets at least monthly to conduct its business and provides opportunities for public input at each meeting.

  • Public Comment at Regular Meetings:  Community Comment is a standing agenda item at each Regular Meeting of the School Board, typically held the first Thursday of the month. Community Comment is an opportunity for the public to address the School Board regarding an item included on the agenda of the meeting in accordance with established guidelines for public comment. Community Comments are scheduled early in the meeting agenda.
  • Public Comment at Study Sessions: Citizen Input os a standing agenda item at each School Board Study Session, typically held the third Thursday of the month.  Citizen Input is an opportunity for the public to address the School Board regarding any topic (regardless of the agenda) within established guidelines for public comment.
  • Listening Sessions: Scheduled several times each school year by the School Board to address specific issues related to Board or District goals.  The School Board designates the topic and identifies specific constituencies from which they wish to gather information about a topic within established guidelines for Listening Sessions.
  • PTO/PTA Meetings:  A School Board member attends each school's PTA/PTO Meeting at least once per year and Board members are happy to attend additional meetings at the request of the PTA/PTO leadership. The School Board respects the significant work and meeting time required for a PTA/PTO to operate effectively and, therefore, prefers to be invited to PTO/PTA Meetings at the call of the PTO/PTA Executive Board.

Personal Meetings:  Constituents who wish to meet with individual School Board members may arrange to do so by contacting individual Board members

E-mailThe District maintains a group email address for the School Board to easily facilitate constituent communication. If you wish to communicate with the entire School Board, please email:  schoolboard@minnetonka.k12.mn.us. All Board members will receive your correspondence; the Board Chair or Vice Chair respond to emails on behalf of the Board. If you wish to contact individual Board members,  School Board member e-mail addresses are published on the District website

Telephone:  Phone or face-to-face meetings provide opportunity for dialogue that cannot be achieved through e-mails.  For more complex or emotional topics, a phone call or face-to-face meeting may be most effective. School Board members phone numbers are published on the District website.
